LETTUCE

Today's cultivated lettuce is thought to have originated from the wild lettuce Lactuca serriola.  This was used for medicinal purposes.  A Cos variety is depicted on the walls of many Egyptian tombs and was grown about 4500 B.C.  It was also thought to be an aphrodisiac and used as a tobacco substitute in some areas of the world.
