black pepper, which was very expensive at the time, and that is how they came to be called “peppers”.  Capsaicin, the compound that produces the heat in hot peppers, is found in most wild peppers but not in sweet peppers.   In most areas of the world, the green peppers are considered unripe and not eaten.  Only in the U.S. are green peppers popular.  Peppers have, by weight, twice as much Vitamin C as citrus.  They also contain high amounts of Vitamin A.  Both of these vitamins are powerful antioxidants.
